Student Cassandra Amzallag transferred from Santa Monica College. She is currently double majoring in English Literature and Japanese. She is also the President of the only co-ed transfer fraternity, Chi Alpha Psi!

Cassandra is a first-generation, non-traditional student and commuter. She is also the type of person always willing to make friends and help out others, especially with classes or even everyday things!

Here she shares her unique transfer story:

Cassandra: "After being out of school for 8 years due to personal and family health issues, I made the decision to return to school and work towards my future. After finishing my time at SMC, I honestly thought that getting my Associates would be the end but I pushed myself to apply and strive for higher goals at UCLA. When I received the acceptance I was truly happy and realized that no matter how much time I spent away from education it was something I could jump back into and make my dreams come back to life." In addition to her amazing journey, Cassandra also is a traveling transfer! She traveled to Tokyo, Japan at ICU from 8.25.19 to 11.27.19 and continued to stay in Japan past the end of her program to travel around more.

Cassandra shares her experience for study abroad:

Cassandra:

"This isn't my first time in Japan, nor will it be the last, but this was my first time studying in Japan. I learned that even though this institution is outside of the US, it's not entirely that different. The Professors still are passionate about their topics, the school is extremely supportive, and the campus is simply beautiful. I learned that even though countries have different cultures and ideals, that we are all humans with the desire to learn and grow. It made me feel less like a foreigner and more like a regular student living in Japan.

Thank you so much Cassandra for sharing, and welcome back to UCLA!
