Student Humberto Rangel transferred from El Camino College and is currently majoring in Spanish.
As a first-generation and non-traditional student, Humberto made the decision to transfer after help from his family, peers and coworkers. If anyone would like to reach out for transfer or study abroad advice or concerns, Humberto is more than happy to help out a fellow transfer!
Humberto:
"In 2012, right after high school I moved to Houston Texas from LA where I stayed with my dad for a year and attended San Jacinto College North. I didn’t do so well in school, I lost interest and decided to return to LA to help my mom at home. I worked for three years straight a 9-5 job where I was constantly told by my coworkers and family members I should return to school. In 2016, I quit my job and enrolled back into school at El Camino College in Torrance, CA. Two years later with the support of family, friends and faculty I applied to transfer to 8 universities and to my surprise 7 accepted my application and one waitlisted me. Today I’m a current senior at UCLA in the Spanish department and I’m very proud to be part of the transfer community despite all the hardships, struggles and insecurities I went through."
From June 2019 to December 2019, Humberto studied abroad to Mexico City, Mexico from June 2019 to December 2019 for summer and fall quarters.
Humberto shares his experience from studying abroad as a travelling transfer: "Studying abroad in Mexico City has been a life changing experience that I will never forget. Making a bold decision like this was challenging for me because it comes with a lot of questions while still being in school. I have learned and appreciated so much about the culture, the language, the people and the land where I’m staying at that I didn't know before living here in Mexico. This country is where both my parents are from and to be able to study, live and embrace my family heritage has been very beautiful and fulfilling to me and my identity. Studying abroad has also opened up many doors, opportunities and connections with people here in Mexico City for my future I never could have imagined I would ever meet. This whole experience has peaked my interest to continue to travel the world and educate myself even more." Thank you so much for sharing Humberto!!! You are a star!
