Leia Yen is a UCLA alumnus but also a fellow transfer student who has been awarded the very prestigious Marshall Scholar award of 2019. No other transfer has been awarded the award and UCLA has not had a Marshall scholar earn the award in 12 years. (2007 to be more exact)

Who is a Marshall Scholar?

As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programmes contributes to their ultimate personal success.

A word from Leia: "I’m thrilled and grateful to be able to continue my Digital Humanities research and graduate studies at King’s College London through the Marshall Scholarship. While the award alone is a tremendous honor, I am especially happy to represent UCLA as the first transfer student from our university to become a Marshall (and the first UCLA student to win in 10 years!). I hope that this achievement honors the people who have invested in me at both UCLA and El Camino College since I wouldn’t be here without their support. And, I hope that more community college students recognize what I tried to communicate to the Marshall Commission: that the CC/transfer experience is one with unique challenges that can develop students into the kinds of leaders that are needed today, leaders that understand the values of diversity and accessibility who also have the resilience to work towards those goals. My pathway may look very different from the other Marshalls, but I’m grateful to God that it allowed me to take ownership of my education while leading me to the best mentors and communities that I could have asked for."
