Transfer student Leyla Barkhordar has many family members who are UCLA alumni, including her mother, uncle, three of her cousins and older brother. She also had many family members who attended Santa Monica College, which is where she transferred from. Growing up her family expected her to become a doctor but instead she preferred to give back to the community in another way.

Leyla decided she wanted to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher. With this goal in mind, she is currently getting her bachelors degree in Sociology with a minor in Education Studies and is an incoming student for the 2019-2020 year. She is already involved in UCLA Unicamp and the Pilipino Transfer Student Partnership. She also plans on being involved in Transfer Center Mentor Program.

Her plans after she graduates include pursuing a Masters in Education and a California teaching credential hopefully through UCLA's Teacher Education Program at UCLA's Graduate School of Education. She'd like to work as an elementary school teacher close to home, and then one day start a non-profit organization that provides school supplies to elementary schools in under-served communities in Los Angeles County. This year she was offered an opportunity to work as a teacher assistant at Warner Avenue Elementary School, an elementary school about a 20 minute walk from her dorm. She loves to watch sports and traveling.

Leyla you are a transfer rock star and you're going to make a great teacher. Keep working hard!
