Student Milagros Martinez Stordeur transferred from Moorpark Community College. Currently she is majoring in Political Science with a minor in History. Listen to Milagros' transfer story and learn more about what she is currently doing for the Transfer community!

Milagros:

"I am extremely proud of my educational journey and background. As a first-generation student and Argentine immigrant, I felt both financially and mentally unprepared to jump into the "traditional" 4-year college route. Therefore, I chose to go to a community college instead. While attending Moorpark Community College, I worked as an ESL bilingual aid for high school students during the day and a hostess at night. All in an effort to pay for school. Because of my two jobs, I unfortunately wasn't as involved at my cc. This was something I wanted to change when I transferred."

"While I now hold immense transfer pride, I didn't always feel proud of my transfer journey. I felt like the work I had done in high school had "gone too waste" and admittedly felt "too good" to go to a cc. I realize now that these naive perceptions stemmed from the stigmatized idea that 2-year institutions are for "failures" and "lazy" students. It wasn't until I actually transferred from Moorpark Community College when I understood just how false that narrative truly is. I am beyond thankful for the community college system for it gave me the opportunity to attend my dream school, UCLA."

"While at UCLA, I joined the Transfer Leadership Coalition as a member and felt inspired to continue advocacy work on behalf of the transfer community. Currently, I chair the TLC alongside my co-chair Zuleika Bravo. I became a staff member for USAC's Office of the Transfer Student Representative and have since been promoted to Director of External Relations. I'm also a member for the National Tau Sigma Honor Society. Most recently, I was a New Student Advisor for the New Student and Transition Programs where I worked as a peer and academic advisor for the incoming UCLA students. While extremely challenging, I can't help but feel grateful to be in a position where I get to do what I love most: help students. I know I want to continue empowering students, especially those from disadvantage backgrounds, after I graduate. I'm eager to continue my educational journey in graduate school, but I'm still debating between pursuing a MA in Education Leadership or in Public Policy. Because of that, I'll be taking a gap year (or two) where I'll hopefully figure that out. But for now, I'm just happy to be a #bruin and #transfer. "

We are happy to have you in the Bruin transfer community!!! Thank you Millie!
