Traveling Transfer Jaime Cervantes de Reinstein Shares his Advice as a UCLA Transfer!

Student Jaime transferred from Santa Monica College. He is currently studying Sociology and minoring in Education Studies. Jaime is a commuter, first-gen, non-traditional student and is happily married. Here is the advice he has to offer for the transfer community: You made it! Congratulations! Enjoy your time here at UCLA; try not to bear a deficit mindset or worrying about the "what ifs?" Be proactive and seek out help from professors, TA's, and peers because no one else will advocate for you better than yourself. I promise you the experience will be rewarding. Plus, you get to learn more about yourself: your strengths and weaknesses.

I'm currently a Queer Peer Counselor with Queer Peer Counseling (under the LGBTQ+ Center), where I provide mentorship and counseling services to other LGBTQ+ students. Queer Peer Counseling differentiates itself from other peer counseling programs at UCLA in that it strives to provide more nuanced and culturally-aware support to current and incoming undergraduate students who may have needs more specific to the LGBTQ+ community. I'm applying this year to the MSW program here at UCLA and hope to be accepted! I'm interested in macro-level practice in policy and leadership administration - and dealing with research and social policy of immigrant and refugee families.

In addition, Jaime and his partner travel a lot, especially during the Christmas and New Year break, when their schedules lighten up. Last year (2018-2019), they traveled to Switzerland, Sweden, and Morocco, while this winter break, they plan to travel throughout Italy!

Thank you Jaime for reminding us that we belong here at UCLA and safe travels!
